First Presbyterian Church: USC Concert Choir Christmas Concert | Dec 1

The university’s premier choral ensemble presents their final concert of the semester. The concert program features Morten Lauridsen’s “Mid-Winter Songs,” and J.S. Bach’s Motet, BWV 226 Der Geist hilt unsrer Schwachheit auf, in addition to canticles and carols for the Christmas season. Carols Along the Riverwalk | Dec 1

The sounds of Christmas will be heard throughout the Cayce Riverwalk Park, where several area church choirs and local musicians will be performing within the first half mile of the park. Visitors can wander from group to group, enjoying various holiday musical selections! Event will be held 6:30pm at the N Avenue Entrance, Cayce Riverwalk Pavilion. More here

Newberry Opera House: A Carolina Christmas | Dec 2

Celebrate the start of the season with Doug and Bunny Williams and their friends. This show features music and memories from a Southern point of view. Pianist Jason Carpenter will play for singers Kyle and Linda Collins and Walter Graham. Jim Graddick will lead a string quartet, and singing along will be students from Newberry Acadamy. Website here.

Newberry College Music Building: Tuba Christmas | Dec 9

All are invited to attend Newberry’s Tuba Christmas happening in Newberry College Music Building at 3pm. This free and open to the public event features tuba and euphonium/baritone horn players performing Christmas carols that have been specifically arranged for these low bass instruments, creating as sound that has been described to be like “that of a male vocal choir.” There will also be an opportunity for community singing during the event. Newberry Opera House: The Embers Christmas Show | Dec 12

For decades, The Embers have been making music by playing a mix of rhythm and blues and heart and soul. Rhythm and Blues became the foundation of soul music and the Motown sound. But, in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Florida and Alabama the name that applies is “Beach Music”. Bobby Tomlinson, drummer and the leader of the band, believes that Beach Music is music with a memory. Others believe that Beach Music is simply lyrics that are easy to sing with and simple melodies and pretty harmonies that accompany them. More here.

A Child’s Prospective | December 14 & 15

Experience the joy of music through the eyes of a child with a performance of Rutter’s “Mass of the Children.” We will be joined by the Rushingbrook Children’s Choir (Greenville, SC) and orchestral accompaniment to present this glorious masterwork. Anyone who has the desire to sing or hear Messiah is invited to Sing-Along MessiahDecember 18, 7:00pm, at beautiful, historic Washington Street United Methodist Church in downtown Columbia.  Be a part of a joyous night of worship, Sing Along Messiahinstrumental music, and singing, as a professional orchestra, accomplished soloists, and a choir of 800 voices perform Part One of Handel’s Messiah, perhaps the best known and most popular oratorio ever written.  For this 15th anniversary community celebration, soloists are professional singers, four native South Carolinians with national and international performance acclaim.
