Hanukkah Jelly Donuts

Close up view of tasty donuts with jam on dark background. Hanukkah celebration concept

These donuts, or “sufganiyot” in Hebrew, are one of the traditional foods of the Festival of Lights. Frying them in oil symbolizes the miracle of the Temple oil in the story of Hanukkah.

Time: 1 hour
Servings: Approx. 30 donuts

Ingredients:

2 tbsp active dry yeast
½ cup warm water (110° to 115°)
¼ cup plus 1 tsp sugar
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour, plus some for dusting
2 large eggs
2 tbsp unsalted butter at room temperature
½ tsp freshly grated nutmeg
2 tsp salt
3 cups vegetable oil, plus some for bowl
1 cup jam – strawberry, blueberry, raspberry or mixed
additional sugar

Directions:

In a medium bowl, combine yeast, warm water, and 1 tsp sugar. Set aside about 10 minutes.

Place flour in a large bowl. Make a well in the center and add eggs, yeast mixture, ¼ cup sugar, butter, nutmeg, and salt. Stir until sticky dough forms. On a floured work surface, knead until dough is smooth, soft, and bounces back when poked with a finger. Place in an oiled bowl and cover, then set in a warm place to rise until doubled (1-2 hours).

On a floured surface, roll dough to ¼ -inch thickness, then use a round cutter or glass to cut 20 rounds. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise 15 minutes.

In medium saucepan, heat oil until a deep-frying thermometer registers 375 degrees. Fry 4 rounds at a time in oil until golden. Turn donuts over and fry until golden on other side. Transfer to a paper-towel-lined baking sheet and roll in additional sugar while warm. Repeat with rest of dough.

Fill a pastry bag with jam. Using a skewer, make a hole in the side of each donut and pipe 2-3 teaspoons of jam into donut. Repeat with remaining donuts. Serve.

Elf on the Shelf

elf-on-shelf

Ho ho ho! Santa has sent one of his elves to see how your little ones are behaving this holiday season. And that swift little elf is always getting into trouble and hiding in cool places! (That elf must be pretty clever!) Below are FIVE cool, creative ideas for your mischievous elf:

elf-on-a-shelf-2705858_640

Hide your elf among the petals of a Poinsettia plant. Its little red outfit will be camouflaged by the flower’s red petals, and you can position it to peek out from its leaves!

If you have a fish aquarium in your home, put your elf in a plastic Ziploc-type baggie and squeeze out the air, tightly sealing it in, then sink bag into aquarium.

Put your elf in a large mug or a bowl full of mini marshmallows, to look like it’s taking a bubble bath!

The utensil tray in your kitchen is the perfect fit for an elf-sized hiding spot!

Tie your elf to a bunch of helium-filled balloons and see how long it takes to notice it floating near the ceiling!

Holiday Decorating Tips from Decorating Den

To give your home some definite pizzazz this holiday season, think about building around a theme that shows off a personal interest of yours or your family’s. “Consider your hobbies or your collections and turn those into a holiday theme you can design around”, advises Gigi Willetts of Decorating Den Interiors . “Instead of the usual red and green, the usual garland on the mantel and the traditional door wreath, think outside the box to create truly memorable decorations”, says Gigi.

dec-den-mcc-2017“Get inspired! Look around your home or your life, and think in terms of what is fun and enjoyable. Does your family share an interest like travel? Have you had fun trips this year? Print and frame some photos you took on vacation, and place them where you, your family and guests can enjoy them and reminisce. Planning on going to the beach or to a foreign destination next year? Why not have a “beachy Christmas” or “A Parisian Holiday” and find items that will excite you about your upcoming trip, and incorporate them into your seasonal decorating. Do you collect something fun like ceramic chickens or miniature toy cars? Let those items become central, and build an imaginative holiday theme around them.” “Even if your whole home does not reflect the theme, sprucing up smaller areas and focal points like an entryway, fireplace mantel, and table settings or centerpieces can add just enough to convey your holiday motif.” Gigi can help you figure out what pieces will fit best and how to integrate them.
